International and European Public Law
Leerdoel
This programme is recognised under Dutch law (the Higher Education and Research Act) and is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council and registered by CROHO (Central Register of Higher Education Study Programmes).
The Master's programme International and European Public Law is designed particularly for students who have an interest in the fundamental issues underlying the international and European legal order, such as the protection of human rights, international labour law standards, international criminal law, constitutional questions in relation to international legislation, as well as in issues of legal protection on the European and the international level.
Students entering the programme should have a demonstrably high level of academic achievement and an interest in international and trans-national issues.
Programma
International and European law are exerting an increasing influence on the contents of national legal systems in substantive as well as procedural matters. The European Union, with its (partly) supranational powers, interacts directly with the legal systems of its Member States.
International organisations such as the United Nations and the Council of Europe are platforms on which treaties are prepared, leading to new obligations for the states concerned.
In addition, states find themselves bound by customary law, as well as by an ever-increasing amount of case-law arising out of the activities of judicial or quasi-judicial organs under international treaties to which they are parties.
This master's programme deals with these developments.
The Master's programme of International and European Public Law offers two specialisations:
- International and Human Rights Law
- European Union Law
In order to obtain a specialisation, students must follow three compulsory courses (18 ects) and three optional courses (18 ects) in the field of their specialisation. Next to these 26 ects, 6 ects can be obtained with another course of the Faculty of Law. All students must participate in the Research Law (3 ects) and write a Master's thesis (15 ects) in the field of their specialisation.
Students, who have insufficient knowledge of either International or European law, must take an introductory course (3 ects) on top of 60 ects.
Toelatingseisen
Each application is assessed individually by the programme coordinator and the admission committee of the Faculty.
In assessing the applications, the following considerations are decisive:
- Candidates must have a university-level degree in Law, International Relations, or Political Science.
- Candidates must have a strong academic record as evidenced, among other things, by their academic results. Candidates are strongly advised to provide evidence of their standing within their class: top 20%, next 20%, average, etc.
- Candidates must evidence a good command of English (with TOEFL or IELTS results or equivalent).
Beroepsperspectief en arbeidsmarkt
The programme will prepare students for legal practice, such as posts within national and international public administration, national and international non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the diplomatic service, European and international courts, multinational enterprises, and advocacy.
