International Business Law
Leerdoel
This programme is recognised under Dutch law (the Higher Education and Research Act) and is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council and registered by CROHO (Central Register of Higher Education Study Programmes).
Globalisation and the growth in international trade place new demands on lawyers around the world, increasingly leading them to approach the law in an integrated fashion, going beyond the traditional vision in which “the law” is found in a given national legal system. For instance, they must advise and assist clients regarding a plurality of legal systems and reconcile the legal requirements of their “home country” with those of other jurisdictions. Similarly, at different levels of public administration – international, European, national, and sub-national –, there is an increasing need for lawyers who are familiar with the international and European law concerning trans-national activities.
This programme aims to prepare students to meet those demands. It gives them the specialised knowledge and understanding they need, helps them perfect their abilities, and makes them move from the more passive environment of their first degree to a more active, autonomous, and critical attitude towards law and society.
Afstudeervarianten
The programme offers three specialisations: International Business Law This specialisation is geared towards the private law governing international businesses. It is aimed at students with an interest in international legal transactions and the law concerning firms active at the trans national level. European Law and Regulation This specialisation focuses on the European regulatory environment for economic activities. It is designed for students with an interest in the process of European and international economic and social integration, and the implications of this process for the national laws of the Member States. Law and Economics This specialisation offers a mix of law and economics courses. It introduces students to the new regulatory economics and institutions that together are responsible for the delivery of effective government policymaking.
Programma
The programme aims to provide students with a better knowledge and understanding of key subjects such as business law, commercial law, competition law and economic regulation. The emphasis lies on an integrated knowledge of the various fields of law and levels of jurisdiction, together with neighbouring academic disciplines, especially economics.
Furthermore, it provides students with the opportunity to hone their skills in research, argumentation, communication, analysis, and teamwork. It also marks a step ahead from their first degree towards the real world, where they are expected to be aware of the broader social and economic context, to take a critical distance from the law, and to assume responsibility.
The Master's programme consists of 60 ECTS. It is divided into two semesters of 30 ECTS each. Additionally, 15 ECTS can be obtained from so-called 'complementary' courses, which are highly recommended in order to obtain a complete business law profile.
Toelatingseisen
Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in International and European Law at Tilburg University are automatically admitted to the programme. Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree from another programme of the Faculty of Law of Tilburg University may be admitted to the programme, if necessary, under the condition that they successfully follow supplementary courses or undertake supervised reading, in particular on EU/EC law and/or competition law prior to the beginning of the programme or in the course of their first semester. Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in law from an institution of higher education in the Netherlands other than a university may be admitted to the programme, provided that they successfully follow appropriate supplementary courses before the beginning of the programme.
Beroepsperspectief en arbeidsmarkt
The programme has been designed to prepare students for a role in the various types of business or other professional practices that they are likely to encounter in their careers, including large international law firms, the in-house legal departments of large firms, the civil service (including the EC civil service) and trans-national associations (both for-profit, and non-profit).
