Law and Technology

Leerdoel

The graduate programme of Law and Technology focuses on the regulatory and legal aspects of the introduction of innovative technologies into society, and on their legal consequences that this has for the management of technologies within organisations. Key questions include: In what ways do new technologies influence possibilities for regulating human interaction? How can private and public actors respond to the possibilities offered by new technologies? How should they influence the speed and direction of developments in fields such as information and communication technologies, genomics, and nanotechnology? What impact do new technologies have on existing legal frameworks? How do the relevant statutes restrict actions and policies on new technologies, both within organisations and in society as a whole? What possibilities do relevant laws offer for the management and exploitation of technological innovations and know-how? Since technology is by nature a cross-border phenomenon, emphasis will be laid on international and European law. As many technologies are developing rapidly, often so quickly that legislation cannot keep up, ample attention will also be given to comparative law, jurisprudence, public administration, and ethical perspectives. This ensures that students will acquire the necessary conceptual tools and resources for assessing new applications and their uses.

Programma

The programme requires the active participation of the students. They are expected to take part in discussions, to write a number of short papers, do practical assignments, and give presentations on different topics. An individual mentor will be assigned to each student at the start of the programme. Thesis The thesis subject must be in the field of law and technology. Thesis preparation will be supervised by a professor or lecturer of TILT. Supervisors will be assigned by the thesis coordinator on the basis of the student's choice of thesis topic. Traineeship/Internship Research for and the writing of the thesis may be combined with an internship in an (external) organisation. TILT can help finding a suitable host organisation.

Toelatingseisen

Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in Dutch Law, International and European Law, or Law and Management at Tilburg University will be automatically admitted to the Masters programme. Students of Dutch Law are strongly recommended to include the elective Eindvak ICT en Recht in their Bachelor's programme. STUDENTS WITH A BACHELORS DEGREE OTHER THEN LAW ARE INVITED TO APPLY AS WELL. THEIR ADMISSABILITY WILL BE JUDGED ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS. Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree in law from an institution of higher education in the Netherlands other than a university may be admitted to the graduate programme provided that they successfully follow appropriate supplementary courses before the beginning of the programme.

Beroepsperspectief en arbeidsmarkt

The programme will prepare students for roles as intermediaries between management, corporate lawyers, and engineers in various types of business or other professional practices, such as law firms, in-house legal departments of large firms, the civil service, and non-governmental organisations. The programme offers ample opportunities for gaining experience in professional settings.
